[Vincent wanders through the House of Personas, staring at reflections of... himself. He passes by future versions, which look exactly unchanged from one to the next. Sometimes the images aren't him exactly, but rather the four beings inside him.]

[The ones from the past are different, though. He lingers briefly at one of his Turk self. Then continues moving along, now to one where he's half-transformed- the first time it ever happened. This is where he pauses for a while, recalling the horror he experienced upon discovering the alterations.]

The past rarely was.

What happened to cause that to occur?

An experiment... but not the Malnosso. It happened before I came here.

What kind?

It was more... scientific in nature.

What were they trying to do?

One might call it... a punishment.

But surely there was some sort of goal to it.

There was little purpose behind Hojo's madness.

Sheer curiosity?

I confronted him regarding his unethical experiments. That was... part of how he retaliated.

Only part? What was the rest of it?

[Pauses a moment. But... well... why not speak of it? There's nothing to lose.]

When I confronted him, he shot me... it was after that when he performed the experiments. Afterward, I was left locked away, sleeping, for... a long time. It was his vengeance and my punishment for failing to end his horrific experiments.

So you're saying it's your own fault.

Even though I know he bears responsibility as well... in ways I will always blame myself.

Because you failed, or because you tried in the first place?

...because I tried too late to stop anything.

Why did you wait, then?

[Sighs] I voiced my concerns in the beginning of the project... but the other scientist working with him... [Trails off a moment] It wasn't my decision to make. I was only meant to guard their project. It wasn't until I saw the consequences unfolding that I tried again... but it was too late to reverse the damage done.

Would you prefer it if you hadn't tried to stop them?

I would have regretted that more.

What would have happened if you tried at the beginning?

Assuming it had succeeded, lives would have been spared... a threat we faced would not have emerged...
